The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has debunked a fake press statement circulating on social media claiming that the payment of students’ upkeep allowances has been suspended due to the exhaustion of funds allocated by the Federal Government.

  • NELFUND says the statement alleging a delay in student upkeep payments is fake.
  • The agency denies claims that funds for the upkeep allowance have been exhausted.
  • Beneficiaries are urged to ignore the false statement circulating online.
  • NELFUND advises students to rely only on its official communication channels for verified information.
  • The Fund says investigations are underway to identify those behind the misinformation.

In a statement issued on Friday, NELFUND described the viral document, dated July 3, 2026, as false and misleading, stressing that it did not originate from the agency.

The fake statement had claimed that payments of students’ upkeep allowances had been postponed because the Federal Government’s allocation for the programme had been exhausted and that the Fund was awaiting additional releases from the Accountant-General of the Federation.

NELFUND categorically rejected the claims, noting that the document was fabricated to misinform students and the general public.

The agency urged beneficiaries of the student loan programme and other stakeholders to disregard the fake statement and rely solely on verified information published through its official communication channels.

According to NELFUND, official updates on the student loan programme are communicated only through its website and verified social media platforms.

The Fund also warned members of the public against sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary anxiety among students and beneficiaries of the programme.

NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and effective communication, assuring beneficiaries that any important updates regarding the student loan scheme would be announced through its official platforms.

The agency added that appropriate steps are being taken to trace the source of the fake statement and prevent the spread of misinformation capable of undermining public confidence in the programme.
