  • INEC extends Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks.
  • New deadline for voter registration is Sunday, July 26, 2026.
  • Online self-service registration for first-time voters begins Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
  • Eligible voters can register through the dedicated CVR portal.
  • New system features identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks.
  • Commission says the extension will allow more eligible Nigerians to register before future elections.

The commission disclosed the decision in a press statement issued on Friday after reviewing the nationwide CVR exercise and considering feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

INEC said the registration exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, was originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, but has now been extended until Sunday, July 26, 2026, to provide additional opportunities for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register.

According to the commission, the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities.

As part of efforts to modernise voter registration, INEC also announced the introduction of an online self-service registration option for first-time voters.

The commission said the new digital platform will become operational on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through its dedicated CVR portal, where applicants will also find step-by-step registration guidelines.

INEC explained that the self-service platform will allow eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.

According to the commission, the platform incorporates robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

INEC urged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of the extended registration period and embrace the new technology-driven registration option.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process while leveraging technology to improve citizens’ participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The statement was signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
