  • Woman alleges missing kidney: A Gombe woman, Barira Alhassan, claimed one of her kidneys went missing after undergoing a caesarean section at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
  • Health complications after surgery: She said she developed severe abdominal pain, vomiting, body swelling and painful urination before doctors allegedly informed her that she had only one kidney.
  • Family cites previous medical records: Her relatives said earlier medical scans showed both kidneys were intact before the surgery and accused the hospital of withholding her medical records.
  • Hospital denies allegation: Gombe State Specialist Hospital rejected the claims, insisting no kidney was removed during the caesarean section and denying any wrongdoing.
  • Call for independent investigation: The family has petitioned the Gombe State Ministry of Health, demanding an independent probe into the alleged disappearance of the kidney.

The woman, Barira Alhassan, claimed she underwent an emergency C-section at the hospital on April 8, 2026, but was later informed during a medical examination that she had only one kidney, according reporters.

Barira said she began experiencing unusual health complications within days of the surgery, including severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, body swelling and pain while urinating.

She said the symptoms prompted her to seek medical attention, during which a doctor allegedly told her that one of her kidneys was missing.

Barira said she was stunned by the revelation, insisting she had never undergone any procedure involving her kidneys before the operation.

The mother of 10 explained that although she had delivered all her previous children naturally, the April procedure was her first caesarean section.

Her relatives claimed medical scans conducted before the surgery confirmed that both kidneys were intact. They alleged that subsequent examinations carried out after the operation indicated that only one kidney remained.

The family further accused the hospital of refusing to release Barira’s complete medical records despite repeated requests, saying the lack of access had raised further concerns.

Her brother, Zakariyya Alhassan, said a diagnostic scan conducted in 2015 showed Barira had two healthy kidneys before the surgery.

He added that the family approached the hospital management seeking clarification but was dissatisfied with the explanation provided.

According to him, the matter was subsequently reported to the Gombe State Ministry of Health, with the family requesting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged disappearance of the kidney.

The Gombe State Specialist Hospital, however, rejected the allegation, maintaining that no kidney was removed during the Caesarean section and denying any wrongdoing.

The case has generated widespread attention, with the family urging health authorities to carry out an independent investigation to determine what transpired.
