The Eket chapter of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) has pledged to work closely with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance road safety and reduce traffic crashes in Eket and surrounding communities.
Key Highlights:
- NAS and FRSC held a road safety campaign in Eket.
- Motorists were urged to obey traffic rules.
- Speeding and dangerous overtaking were highlighted as key risks.
- Drivers were advised to use speed limiters and check vehicles regularly.
- NAS donated 20 fire extinguishers to motorists.
The commitment was made during a road safety awareness campaign held at motor parks across Eket on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, the President of NAS, Idongesit Ifon, who was represented by Okechukwu Mgbeahurike, said the association partnered with the FRSC to educate motorists and other road users on the importance of safe driving practices.
He described the campaign theme: “Road Safety Awareness Beyond Ember Months,” as timely, noting that road safety should remain a priority throughout the year and not only during the ember months when accidents are often highlighted.
“A journey can only be considered safe when it begins and ends safely. Any journey that does not end well cannot be described as a safe one,” he said.
Delivering a lecture during the campaign, Superintendent Route Commander, Uko Utipime of the FRSC Eket Unit, urged motorists and road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations.
According to him, road crashes are generally caused by three major factors: human, mechanical and environmental factors.

He identified excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking as some of the leading causes of accidents on Nigerian roads and advised motorists to install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles.
“The speed-limiting device prevents a driver from accelerating beyond the speed limit programmed into the vehicle, thereby helping to reduce crashes caused by overspeeding,” Utipime explained.
He also encouraged drivers to carry out routine vehicle checks before embarking on journeys, obey speed limits and maintain safe distances while driving.
As part of the campaign, the association distributed 20 fire extinguishers to motorists to support emergency preparedness and promote safer road use.
