Police said sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering eventually led to the victim’s safe rescue on June 18 without injury, after which officers intensified efforts to apprehend members of the suspected kidnapping gang.
Acting on fresh intelligence, operatives traced the suspects to a hideout within the state. The command alleged that the suspects opened fire when they sighted the police team, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
During the operation, two of the suspected kidnappers were killed, while other members of the group reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.
A search of the scene led to the recovery of a single-barrel firearm, one spent cartridge, a mobile phone, and ₦2.2 million in cash, which police believe may be proceeds from criminal activities.
The command said investigations are continuing and efforts are underway to arrest the fleeing suspects and dismantle the wider criminal network.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for what he described as its professionalism and courage during the operation.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and assured residents that security agencies would continue to pursue kidnappers and other violent offenders across the state.
The commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist law enforcement agencies in combating crime.
