The Akwa Ibom State government has announced plans to officially unveil the 350-bed Ibom International Hospital and the Ibom Medical City Project on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in what it describes as a landmark initiative aimed at transforming healthcare delivery and positioning the state as a leading hub for medical tourism in Africa.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah on Saturday, said the unveiling ceremony will take place at the Ibom Medical City, along the Uyo–Ikot Ekpene Road and will be performed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate.

National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative on Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, is also expected to attend the event.

According to the statement, the Ibom Medical City Project represents a major milestone in the administration of Governor Umo Eno and is designed to create an integrated healthcare ecosystem that combines clinical services, medical education, research, accommodation, innovation, and wellness within a single development framework.

“The project is a flagship healthcare development designed to strengthen medical service delivery, expand innovation, and position Akwa Ibom as a leading destination for healthcare and medical tourism in Africa,” the statement reads.

The project is being implemented through a coordinated effort involving the Ministries of Health, Special Duties, and Housing, with supervision provided by Tokiye Integrated Medical Services (TIMS), a healthcare project development and management firm operating in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Umanah noted that the initiative emerged from recommendations and endorsements by healthcare stakeholders following the Ministry of Health’s ARISE Health Sector Town Hall Meeting held on July 12, 2025.

At the heart of the development is the 10-storey, 350-bed Ibom International Hospital, which will offer services across 24 specialty departments.

Other components of the Medical City, include a 100-unit residential accommodation for medical personnel, medical research and training centres, pharmaceutical and laboratory hubs, as well as digital health and wellness infrastructure.

According to the statement, these facilities are intended to support advanced healthcare delivery, foster medical innovation, and attract healthcare investments and medical tourists to the state.

Speaking on the significance of the project, the commissioner described it as “a historic milestone in the transformation of healthcare delivery in the State and across Africa.”
