Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos of allegedly attempting to cover up the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Adichie-Esege.
Key Highlights:
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital of concealing details surrounding her son’s death.
- She alleged doctors failed to meet the expected standard of care during a sedation procedure.
- Adichie disputed the official cause of death listed on the death certificate.
- She claimed the hospital discouraged the family from pursuing legal action and later challenged the coroner’s inquest.
- The case remains under investigation, with some doctors suspended pending the outcome.
Adichie made the allegations public in a letter addressed to the chairman of the hospital’s board of directors, which she shared on social media, explaining that she could no longer remain silent over what she described as serious wrongdoing.
In the letter, the author alleged that the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, admitted shortly after Nkanu’s death that the anaesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, failed to meet the expected standard of care during the procedure.
She claimed the medical director told her that Nkanu was given an excessive amount of propofol, accepted responsibility, and promised action against the doctor involved.
However, Adichie alleged that communication later stopped and that the hospital management took control of the matter.
She also disputed the cause of death recorded on her son’s certificate, which listed bacterial and fungal meningitis.
According to her, Nkanu arrived at the hospital conscious and responsive, and she believes his death was linked to complications from sedation, leading to brain injury and cardiac arrest.

The celebrated writer further alleged that a senior figure linked to the hospital tried to discourage the family from pursuing legal action through a message she described as intimidating.
She questioned the hospital’s decision to challenge the coroner’s inquest, noting that the inquest was initially requested by Euracare itself following concerns over possible negligence.
Nkanu died on January 7, 2026, after complications during a sedation procedure at the Lagos hospital.
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria later suspended some doctors connected to the case pending investigation.
Euracare had not responded publicly to Adichie’s claims at the time of reporting.
The case continues as legal proceedings over the coroner’s inquest remain ongoing.
