Renowned Nigerian music executive and founder of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy, has opened up about the impact repeated rejection from girls had on his self-esteem during his secondary school years.

Key Points

  • Don Jazzy revealed that repeated rejection from girls during his secondary school years negatively affected his self-esteem and confidence.
  • He said he did not consider himself attractive as a teenager and often faced rejection when trying to form relationships.
  • According to him, the experience continued to influence how he viewed himself even after becoming successful in the music industry.
  • Don Jazzy disclosed that he later sought out some of the girls who had rejected him as a way of finding closure, but most of them were already married.
  • He credited his personal growth, success in music, and reconnecting with former schoolmates for helping him overcome the emotional impact of those experiences.

Speaking during an episode of the Keeping It Real With Jima podcast, the award-winning producer revealed that he struggled with confidence as a teenager, largely because of unsuccessful attempts at forming relationships.

According to Don Jazzy, he did not consider himself attractive while growing up and often faced rejection from girls he admired, an experience he said left a lasting emotional effect on him.

The music mogul explained that the repeated disappointments affected his confidence and continued to influence how he viewed himself even after achieving fame and success in the entertainment industry.

Reflecting on those years, he disclosed that he later sought out some of the girls who had turned him down in an effort to find closure and overcome the emotional scars of his past experiences.

“I wasn’t good-looking during my secondary school days. Thank God for music because back then I was constantly being rejected by girls.

“But after I became successful, I went back to find all the girls who had rejected me. Almost all of them were already married,” he said.

Don Jazzy noted that reconnecting with some of his former schoolmates and reflecting on his personal growth helped him come to terms with those experiences and rebuild his confidence.

The record label boss is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential music executives, having nurtured and supported the careers of several leading Nigerian artists while contributing significantly to the growth of the country’s music industry.

Over the years, Don Jazzy has remained one of Nigeria’s most admired entertainment figures, known not only for his achievements in music production but also for his openness about personal experiences and life lessons.
