Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson following the expiration of his contract with Liverpool.

The veteran left-back is set to officially join the North London club on July 1, ending an illustrious eight-year stay at Anfield where he became one of Liverpool’s most dependable and accomplished players.

Key Highlights:

  • Tottenham Hotspur signed Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool F.C..
  • The Scotland captain joins Spurs on July 1.
  • He leaves Liverpool after eight successful years and 378 appearances.
  • Manager Roberto De Zerbi praised his experience and leadership.
  • Robertson is expected to strengthen Tottenham’s defense and dressing room.

Robertson, 32, had earlier indicated that he would leave Liverpool at the conclusion of his contract, opening the door for Spurs to complete the deal.

Sources close to the transfer revealed that Tottenham had previously explored a move for the defender during the January transfer window. However, Liverpool reportedly blocked the transfer at the time due to concerns over squad depth and the absence of a suitable replacement.

The acquisition represents another important step in Tottenham’s rebuilding process under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who successfully kept the club in the Premier League on the final day of the campaign.

Reacting to the signing, De Zerbi described Robertson as a player whose experience and mentality would greatly strengthen the squad.

“Andy brings leadership, quality and vast experience at the highest level of football. He is a player with strong character and a winning mentality,” the manager said.

“He will contribute a lot to this team both on the field and within the dressing room.”

Robertson departs Liverpool with an impressive legacy after joining from Hull City in 2017. During his time with the Reds, he made 378 appearances and played a major role in the club’s domestic and European successes.

Among the honours he won with Liverpool are two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

Internationally, Robertson remains one of Scotland’s most influential players. The defender has earned 92 caps and is expected to captain the national team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup — Scotland’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998.

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange welcomed the signing, saying Robertson’s arrival would add valuable quality and leadership to the squad.

“Andy has consistently demonstrated professionalism, determination and excellence throughout his career,” Lange stated.

“His experience and winning attitude will be very important as we continue building a squad capable of competing at the highest level.”

Robertson is expected to strengthen Tottenham’s defensive options significantly while also providing guidance and leadership for younger players within the team.
