The two-day event, hosted by acclaimed hip-hop group The Roots, kicked off on Saturday at Belmont Plateau, bringing together some of the biggest names in music for what organizers expect will be one of the festival’s most memorable editions.
Speaking ahead of the event, The Roots co-founder Black Thought, born Tarik Trotter, described Jay-Z’s appearance as a meaningful reunion between the hip-hop icon and the city of Philadelphia.
“It’s a return to the connection between the city of Philadelphia and Jay-Z. It’s a return to the essence of what the Belmont Plateau history has always been about the history of Black music there and its soulful energy,” Trotter said.
The relationship between Jay-Z and The Roots spans decades.
According to Trotter, the artists worked closely together during the early stages of their careers when The Roots were signed to a label overseen by Jay-Z.
Building on that longstanding partnership, Trotter and fellow Roots co-founder Questlove invited Jay-Z to headline this year’s festival.
His confirmation helped attract a star-studded lineup featuring acclaimed performers such as Erykah Badu, Brandy, T.I. and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Festival organizers estimate that approximately 80,000 attendees will visit Belmont Plateau over the two-day celebration.
Brandon Pankey, Vice President of Development and Operations for Live Nation Urban, said the expanded lineup prompted organizers to introduce a second stage to accommodate more performances.
“We wanted to make sure we could maximize the impact of the incredible roster of artists performing this year,” Pankey said.

What began nearly two decades ago as a modest music gathering in a parking lot has evolved into one of America’s premier music festivals.
This year’s edition carries additional significance as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z’s groundbreaking debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
Trotter described the album as a defining moment in the rapper’s career and a project that laid the foundation for his rise to global stardom.
“Reasonable Doubt was where it all began. You can’t downplay his popularity, achievements and significance,” he said. “It puts the picnic in the broadest global spotlight we’ve ever experienced, and that’s a blessing.”
As the festival marks its 18th year, organizers say the event reflects nearly two decades of growth and cultural impact, cementing its place as a major celebration of music, community and Black artistic excellence.
