Defending champions Nigeria have declared their readiness for another fierce battle against Jamaica, as the Super Eagles intensify preparations for Saturday’s Unity Cup final at the Charlton Athletic Stadium in London.

Key Highlights:

  • Nigeria national football team will face Jamaica national football team in the Unity Cup final.
  • Coach Eric Chelle may make tactical and lineup changes.
  • Nigeria hopes to defend the title after beating Jamaica in the 2025 final.
  • New players like Arthur Okonkwo and Femi Azeez have impressed.
  • Azeez scored twice on debut as preparations continue for the final.

The three-time winners are approaching the clash with caution despite their impressive 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in Tuesday’s semi-final encounter.

Head Coach Eric Chelle has praised the performance of his youthful and experimental squad, but hinted that changes could still be made to the team’s tactics, formation and personnel ahead of the showdown against the Reggae Boyz.

Nigeria and Jamaica delivered one of the most thrilling fixtures in the competition’s recent history, when both sides played out a dramatic 2-2 draw in the 2025 final before the Super Eagles triumphed 5-4 on penalties to successfully defend the trophy.

The Unity Cup was first staged in 2002 as a two-team competition, with Nigeria defeating Jamaica 1-0 courtesy of a goal from former Golden Eaglets captain James Obiorah.

The Republic of Ireland joined the tournament in 2004, but the Eagles still emerged champions, with Bartholomew Ogbeche finishing as top scorer with three goals.

The 2004 edition also marked the memorable debut of former striker Obafemi Martins, who announced himself with a goal for the national team.

Ahead of Saturday’s final, Chelle is expected to continue experimenting with the fresh faces introduced into the squad.

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is likely to retain his place after an assured display and clean sheet against Zimbabwe.

The defensive quartet of Chibueze Oputa, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Igoh Ogbu and Obinna Igboke may also keep their places after impressing in the semi-final. Ogbu, who plays for Slavia Prague in the Czech Republic, first gained recognition in the Eagles set-up during last year’s Unity Cup.

In midfield, Tochukwu Nnadi could once again combine with Alhassan Yusuf and former Golden Eaglets captain Samson Tijani, while the attacking trio of Terem Moffi, Philip Otele and debut sensation Femi Azeez are expected to provide the firepower upfront.

Cyprus-based goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, midfielder Tosin Oyedokun, and forwards Owen Oseni and Rafiu Durosinmi are also available for selection after making positive impacts from the bench against Zimbabwe.

Much attention will be on Azeez, whose remarkable two-goal performance on debut has excited the technical crew and supporters alike.

The forward became the first player to score twice on his debut for the Super Eagles since Mathias Obianika achieved the feat in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Burkina Faso 55 years ago.

The Super Eagles trained at Cray Valley on Thursday and will hold their official pre-match session at The Valley on Friday ahead of the eagerly anticipated final.
