An under-strength Nigeria side delivered an impressive performance on Tuesday night, defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 at Charlton Athletic Stadium, The Valley, to book a place in the final of the 2026 Unity Cup Football Tournament.

Key Highlights:

  • Nigeria national football team defeated Zimbabwe national football team 2-0 to reach the Unity Cup final.
  • Femi Azeez scored both goals on his debut for Nigeria.
  • Several players, including Arthur Okonkwo and Chibueze Oputa, earned their first senior caps.
  • Coach Eric Chelle fielded a youthful, under-strength squad that dominated the match.
  • Nigeria will face either Jamaica national football team or India national football team in Saturday’s final.

Despite missing several established stars, the Super Eagles dominated proceedings from start to finish as head coach Eric Chelle handed debuts to a number of fresh faces in the squad.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, defender Chibueze Oputa, and forward Femi Azeez all earned their first senior caps for Nigeria in a youthful and largely unfamiliar starting lineup.

Nigeria wasted no time asserting control as Azeez, who plays for Millwall in the English Championship, opened the scoring just five minutes into the game. The forward finished off a flowing team move with a powerful left-footed strike that Zimbabwe goalkeeper Future Sibanda could not keep out.

The Super Eagles continued to pile pressure on the Warriors, with Azeez and midfielder Alhassan Yusuf both going close to extending the lead minutes later, although Sibanda managed to prevent further damage.

Zimbabwe attempted to respond through Marshall Munetsi, but Nigeria’s defence, marshalled by Chibuike Nwaiwu alongside Igoh Ogbu, Oputa, and Igboke, stood firm throughout the encounter.

Jordan Zemura fired over the bar in the 32nd minute before Nwaiwu produced a crucial tackle inside the penalty area to deny Junior Zindoga shortly before halftime.

Nigeria maintained their attacking intensity late in the first half, with Philip Otele and Tochukwu Nnadi both threatening, but the Warriors managed to keep the deficit at one goal heading into the break.

The Super Eagles doubled their advantage in the second half after another swift attacking move. Otele combined brilliantly with Terem Moffi, who set up Azeez to score his second goal of the night after beating Sibanda inside the box.

Zimbabwe pushed forward in search of a response, and goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was forced into a fine save in the 71st minute to preserve Nigeria’s clean sheet.

With the match firmly under control, Coach Chelle introduced Tosin Oyedokun, Owen Oseni, Rafiu Durosinmi, and Aderemi Adeoye, all of whom earned their first appearances for the national team.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Jamaica and India in Saturday’s final at the same venue as the Super Eagles continue their defence of the Unity Cup title.
