Popular Nigerian comedian and actor Basketmouth has criticised what he described as society’s growing obsession with negativity, warning that excellence and hard work are increasingly being ignored in favour of scandals and controversy.
In a strongly worded post shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, the award-winning entertainer accused some Nigerian bloggers and media platforms of promoting failure and embarrassment, while paying little attention to genuine achievements and success stories.

According to Basketmouth, scandals and controversies often dominate headlines for days, whereas people making meaningful contributions to society through innovation, creativity, business growth, and job creation rarely receive the same level of attention.
The comedian questioned when celebrating mediocrity became part of the culture, lamenting that society no longer applauds excellence the way it once did.

He argued that continuously amplifying embarrassing moments instead of success sends a dangerous message that greatness no longer matters.
Basketmouth noted that individuals who break barriers, create opportunities, inspire others, and achieve remarkable milestones are often overlooked, while negative stories quickly become viral topics across multiple platforms.
Calling for a cultural reawakening, he urged Nigerians to begin celebrating achievements, discipline, consistency, creativity, and hard work rather than focusing mainly on gossip, outrage, and public downfalls.
He warned that a society consumed by negativity risks gradually losing appreciation for greatness and excellence.
“Some Nigerian bloggers have mastered the art of turning negativity into premium content. One scandal trends for days, but genuine excellence barely gets a headline,” he wrote.
“At some point, we have to ask ourselves: when did celebrating mediocrity become our culture? When was the last time brilliance trended the way controversy does? When did we stop applauding people for winning?”
Basketmouth further stressed that constantly glorifying failure could discourage people striving for success and meaningful impact.
His comments have since sparked conversations online, with many social media users agreeing that positive achievements and inspiring stories deserve more visibility in Nigeria’s entertainment and media space.
