Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the emotional support she received while signed to Mavin Records, revealing that she often turned to label boss Don Jazzy during difficult moments.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, Tiwa said she did not fully appreciate the importance of having a supportive record label until she left Mavin.
According to the singer, the close relationship she shared with Don Jazzy and other Mavin artistes helped her cope with online controversies and personal struggles at the time.
“Who you signed to is very important and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin. Whenever there’s a controversy online, I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it,” she said.

Tiwa Savage explained that things feel different with foreign labels, noting that the emotional connection and personal care she once experienced are not always present.
“But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part,” she added.
The singer also advised upcoming artistes to look beyond money and fame when choosing record labels, stressing the importance of working with people who genuinely care about their wellbeing and mental health.
Tiwa Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 before exiting in 2019 to sign with Universal Music Group. Despite leaving the label, she has repeatedly described Mavin as “family.”
