The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, on Monday launched a specialised violent crime response unit to tackle armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
Bakori, who spoke at the inauguration of the unit’s operational office in Kano, said the initiative is aimed at boosting rapid response and strengthening intelligence-driven policing.
He said the unit, established on April 24, 2026, followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and is backed by the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.
According to him, the unit is a specialised tactical team set up to respond swiftly to violent crime incidents, prevent criminal activities through proactive deployment, and ensure proper investigation and prosecution of suspects.
“Our goal is to reduce response time and deny criminals the space to operate,” he said.
The police commissioner noted that officers in the unit were carefully selected and trained in tactical response, intelligence gathering and human rights compliance.
He added that the unit would operate with strict adherence to professionalism and accountability, assuring residents of respect for human rights.

Bakori said a civilian oversight board comprising civil society groups, traditional rulers, legal practitioners and community representatives had been set up to monitor the unit’s activities.
He also disclosed that a complaints desk had been established at the unit’s headquarters, while dedicated emergency lines had been provided for the public to report incidents.
The commissioner urged residents to support the police with credible information, assuring that such information would be treated confidentially.
He commended the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for supporting security efforts in the state.
