President Bola Tinubu has applauded Team Nigeria following a dominant outing at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, where the country clinched a record 15th continental women’s title.

Describing the victory as a powerful display of discipline, consistency, and national pride, the president said Nigeria’s wrestlers have once again affirmed their supremacy on the African stage.

Team Nigeria delivered an outstanding performance, securing eight gold and two silver medals in the women’s division, contributing to an overall haul of nine gold, four silver, and three bronze medals across all categories.

Tinubu singled out stars like Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye for their exceptional performances, praising their blend of skill and composure under pressure.

He also commended Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for securing a confident win in the men’s freestyle category, alongside strong contributions from other team members.

The president noted that the victory reflects a growing transformation in Nigeria’s sports development system, driven by improved structure, talent grooming, and long-term planning.

“This is how a sporting nation grows — not by chance, but by design,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing the importance of sustained investment in athlete development.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports as a tool for unity and youth empowerment, Tinubu urged the athletes to stay focused as they prepare for even bigger global competitions.

“Our athletes compete as individuals, but they win as Nigeria,” he added.
