Wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Regina Akume, has formally entered the race for the Benue North-West Senatorial District after picking up her party’s nomination form.
Regina, who is married to the current SGF, George Akume, is seeking to represent the senatorial district in Benue State.
Her decision to contest has generated reactions across political circles, with supporters describing her move as a demonstration of experience and resilience, while critics have raised concerns about age and the growing influence of political families in Nigeria’s democratic space.
Speaking shortly after obtaining the nomination form, Regina Akume emphasised her readiness to serve, insisting that age should not be a limiting factor in leadership.
She noted that her years of experience in public life and grassroots engagement have equipped her with the necessary insight to effectively represent her people at the National Assembly.
Political observers say her candidacy could reshape the dynamics of the senatorial race in Benue North-West, given her visibility and the political structure associated with her husband, a former governor of the state and long-standing figure in national politics.
Analysts also point out that her entry highlights the increasing participation of women in Nigerian politics, even as calls continue for greater gender inclusion and representation in elective positions.

However, some stakeholders argue that her ambition underscores concerns about political dominance by established power blocs, particularly in states where political influence is concentrated among a few families.
The contest for the Benue North-West senatorial seat is expected to attract multiple aspirants, setting the stage for what could be a closely watched primary election.
If she secures her party’s ticket, Regina Akume will face the broader challenge of winning over voters in a district where issues such as security, agriculture, and infrastructure remain central to public discourse.
Her next steps will include consultations with party leaders, grassroots mobilisation, and participation in the party primaries, as the political landscape in Benue begins to take shape ahead of the general elections.
