Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has clarified the rationale behind his decision to back his Commissioner for Works, Mustapha Gubio, as his preferred successor for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

The governor publicly endorsed Gubio after presenting him with the expression of interest and nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, signaling a major political move aimed at shaping the state’s leadership transition.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, Gov. Zulum said his decision was driven by a desire to sustain the developmental strides recorded under his administration.

“I know how I came in as the commissioner of reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement, and how the office helped shape governance standards that transformed the lives of our people,” Gov. Zulum said.

He noted that Gubio possesses similar qualities, including discipline, courage, and a strong commitment to public service.

According to the governor, Gubio has demonstrated outstanding capacity in managing critical infrastructure projects, particularly in housing development across both urban and rural communities.

Gov. Zulum added that Gubio’s contributions have significantly improved living conditions in the state, especially in areas recovering from years of insurgency.

Beyond infrastructure, the governor highlighted Gubio’s role in rebuilding communities devastated by conflict during his tenure as commissioner for reconstruction, rehabilitation, and resettlement.

He credited him with leading efforts to restore essential services and public facilities in severely affected areas.

The statement specifically mentioned reconstruction work in local government areas such as Bama, Konduga, Damasak, and Mafa, where schools, healthcare centres, and other key infrastructure have been revived.

“These efforts align with our broader vision of recovery, stability, and sustainable development,” the statement said, adding that Gubio represents continuity in governance and policy direction.

Gov. Zulum emphasized that the endorsement reflects a strategic decision based on experience, competence, and the need to consolidate existing gains.

He expressed confidence that Gubio would advance the state’s development agenda while maintaining progress in peacebuilding and resilience.

The move is expected to influence political dynamics within the APC in Borno State as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 elections.
