President Bola Tinubu has taken steps to fill the leadership gap in Nigeria’s power sector with the nomination of Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power, following the resignation of Adebayo Adelabu.
The nomination, announced by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga on Thursday, has been forwarded to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional requirements.
Tegbe’s emergence comes at a critical time for the power sector, which has been grappling with persistent grid instability and growing public dissatisfaction over electricity supply.
Adelabu had stepped down from the role to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections, creating a vacancy in one of the country’s most scrutinized ministries.

With over three decades of experience across public and private sectors, Tegbe is expected to bring policy and reform expertise into the role.
He previously served as a senior partner at KPMG Africa and most recently held the position of Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.
His track record includes involvement in fiscal reforms and advisory roles linked to key power sector institutions such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).
According to the presidency, the nomination aligns with ongoing efforts under the administration’s reform agenda to stabilize the national grid and attract sustainable investment into the sector.
The Senate is expected to begin the confirmation process in the coming days.
