Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has formally endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, for the 2027 governorship election, in a move that is expected to shape early political alignments in the state.
The endorsement was announced on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, signalling a clear direction within the state’s political leadership as preparations for the next electoral cycle begin to gather pace.
Hamzat’s ambition has, in recent weeks, gained traction, with a wave of support from political leaders, community groups, and stakeholders across Lagos during a series of consultative visits. The governor’s backing is seen as a significant boost, reinforcing his deputy’s growing influence within the state’s political structure.
Key figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress have also thrown their weight behind the aspiration. Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, had earlier expressed support, while endorsements have also come from Femi Gbajabiamila, Tokunbo Abiru, and Wale Edun, among others.

Observers say the consolidation of support around Hamzat points to a coordinated effort within party ranks to maintain continuity in governance and policy direction in Lagos, a state widely regarded as Nigeria’s political and economic nerve centre.
The development comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with aspirants across the country intensifying consultations and seeking endorsements from key power brokers. In Lagos, the governor’s public backing of his deputy is likely to influence internal party dynamics and shape the contest for the state’s top seat.
While formal party primaries are still some distance away, the early show of support suggests that the race for Lagos governorship may already be taking a defined direction, with Hamzat emerging as a leading contender within the APC.
