The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has intensified efforts to restore public confidence, as Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi issued a fresh warning against extortion, illegal checkpoints, and proxy arrests.
At a strategic conference attended by Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers, the CP relayed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, stressing a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and unprofessional behaviour within the force.
Oyeniyi emphasised the need for intelligence-led policing, improved community engagement, and quicker response to incidents, noting that effective policing must be rooted in professionalism and respect for human rights. He cautioned officers against interfering in civil matters such as land disputes unless they involve clear criminal elements like violence.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the command reaffirmed that accountability would be strictly enforced, with commanders held responsible for actions within their jurisdictions.

The CP gave a firm directive against proxy arrests, insisting that only individuals directly linked to alleged offences should be apprehended. He warned that indiscriminate raids and unlawful detentions damage the credibility of the police and erode public trust.
He also stressed the importance of professionalism at critical points such as charge rooms, describing them as the first point of contact between the police and the public. According to him, only competent and disciplined officers should be assigned to such roles.
The renewed directive signals a broader push to reform policing standards in Delta State, with a focus on discipline, accountability, and lawful conduct as authorities seek to rebuild confidence in law enforcement.
