The Kano State House of Assembly has formally withdrawn its impeachment notice against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam following his resignation from office, bringing an abrupt end to the political standoff.

The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday, presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore, after lawmakers read and considered Abdulsalam’s resignation letter.

Majority Leader Husseini Lawan, who moved the motion, cited the Assembly’s Standing Rules, noting that the withdrawal was necessary since the former deputy governor had stepped down, effectively rendering the impeachment process redundant.

He explained that continuing with the proceedings would serve no constitutional purpose, as the House’s role is limited to investigating allegations and removing a sitting officeholder where necessary.

The motion received unanimous support from members during plenary, marking a swift resolution to the issue that had generated political tension in the state.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Lawan clarified that the Assembly is not an enforcement or anti-corruption body, stressing that its constitutional responsibility ends once an officeholder resigns.

The development signals a temporary easing of political pressure within Kano’s leadership circle, although analysts say it may not fully settle underlying issues that led to the impeachment move in the first place.
