Africa’s largest refining facility, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, has ramped up exports of petrol and urea to countries across the continent in a strategic move to ease supply disruptions linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, confirmed the development during a tour of the refinery, stating that the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility is currently operating at full capacity and is well-positioned to meet fuel demand in Nigeria and across Africa.
According to him, the refinery has already shipped about 17 cargoes of refined fuel to African markets, while exports of urea fertiliser have also increased as buyers seek alternative supply sources.
“What I can do is assure Nigerians and most of West, Central and East Africa that we have the capacity to supply them,” Dangote said.
The refinery’s increased output is helping cushion the impact of global supply shocks, particularly those linked to tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Officials noted that the facility, which produces up to three million metric tonnes of urea annually, is now redirecting more of its exports toward African markets.
In a separate development, the refinery is set for a major capacity expansion through a partnership with Honeywell International Inc.
The collaboration aims to boost daily processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels by 2028, positioning the facility as the largest refining complex in the world.
Under the agreement, Honeywell will provide advanced refining technologies, catalysts and equipment to improve efficiency, expand crude processing flexibility and enhance product quality.
Dangote also revealed plans to significantly scale up fertiliser production from three million to nine million metric tonnes annually, alongside an increase in polypropylene output to 2.4 million metric tonnes.

The expansion aligns with reforms introduced by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which Dangote said have created a more favourable environment for industrial growth.
He added that the refinery’s long-term vision is to transform Nigeria into a global hub for refined petroleum products.
When completed, the upgraded facility is expected to surpass India’s Jamnagar Refinery as the world’s largest, while generating an estimated $55 billion in annual revenue and strengthening Africa’s energy security.
Dangote expressed confidence that beyond refining crude, the project is aimed at driving economic development, reducing fuel imports, creating jobs and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises across Nigeria and the wider region.
