Years after the heartbreaking death of Ochanya Ogbanje, her sister has shared a painful account of how the tragedy led to another devastating loss within their family, their mother.
Ochanya’s case, which drew nationwide outrage in 2018, exposed the horrors of prolonged sexual abuse allegedly carried out by trusted individuals.
Her death not only shook Nigeria but also sparked urgent conversations about child protection and justice.
Speaking recently, her sister revealed that the emotional toll on their mother was overwhelming.
According to her, their mother struggled to cope with the grief and trauma that followed Ochanya’s death and never truly recovered.
“We didn’t just lose Ochanya,” she said. “Our mother was broken by it. She couldn’t carry the pain.”

The family, she said, continues to live with the scars of both losses, while also expressing frustration over the slow pace of justice in the case.
She called for stronger protections for children and more decisive action against perpetrators of abuse.
