2027 Election: Tinubu will lose if Atiku forms joint ticket with Obi or Amaechi, says Dele Momodu

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has predicted that President Bola Tinubu could lose the 2027 presidential election if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar forms a joint ticket with a prominent southern political figure such as Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi.

Momodu made the remarks on Sunday during an appearance on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, where he argued that a strong north south political alliance built around Atiku could significantly weaken the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general election.

According to him, a combined ticket featuring Atiku and a leading southern politician would reshape the political contest and challenge the current dominance of the APC.

“I believe if we have a combination of Atiku, maybe with Peter Obi, maybe with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other person that comes from the South, Tinubu will be gone. It will be the end of Tinubu’s foundation, not the APC,” Momodu said during the programme.

Defending Atiku’s continued relevance in national politics despite several unsuccessful presidential attempts, Momodu compared the former vice president’s persistence to that of Donald Trump, the president of the United States. He argued that long term political preparation and resilience can eventually produce victory.

“From my analysis, Atiku Abubakar, even those who didn’t like him before, now he’s smelling like roses because the enemy of your enemy is your friend. He has prepared forever, just like Donald Trump was preparing forever. People said Donald Trump is old, and like a joke, he is doing his second term now,” Momodu stated.

The ADC chieftain also criticised what he described as the president’s preference for a weakened opposition, warning that the growing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC could weaken Nigeria’s democratic balance.

“Tinubu wants to contest against himself, and it doesn’t make sense to me,” he said, describing the weakening of the PDP as a troubling development for the country’s democratic system.

Atiku, Obi and Amaechi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under different political parties, have recently aligned within the ADC as part of a broader opposition coalition. The alliance also includes notable political figures such as David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola and Nasir El-Rufai, all of whom are regarded as influential players in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.

The ADC is expected to hold its national convention on April 14, 2026, following ward and state congresses scheduled to begin on April 7 as the party prepares for the 2027 electoral contest.
