A pioneer member of the media team of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Ifeanyi Izeze, has died.
The death of the veteran journalist and communications strategist was confirmed on Sunday in a statement issued by the Atiku Media Office, which said the former vice president was deeply saddened by the loss.
According to the statement, Izeze joined Atiku’s media team in 2006 during a crucial phase of the former vice president’s political career.
Prior to that, he worked with the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) located in Ikot Abasi, where he served as an office manager.
The statement noted that Izeze brought extensive knowledge of journalism, the Niger Delta region, and Nigeria’s oil and gas sector to the media team, playing a significant role in shaping communication strategies at the time.
Izeze studied geology at the University of Port Harcourt, completing his education up to the postgraduate level.
Despite his academic background in the sciences, he built a respected career in journalism, writing extensively on Nigeria’s oil and gas industry for several publications, including the now-defunct Sunray, Anchor, and NewAge newspapers.
During his time in the Atiku Media Office, he served as a senior member of the team and its pioneer office manager, contributing to the development of campaign messaging, particularly in the Niger Delta and within the oil and gas policy space.

Beyond journalism and political communications, Izeze was also known for his religious commitment. He was a born-again Christian affiliated with Christ Embassy and an ordained preacher under the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria.
The statement described him as a man with a strong sense of humour and deep faith, adding that he is survived by his children, grandchildren, and his elder brother, Pastor Emeka Izeze, a senior figure at The Guardian newspaper.
The family is expected to announce burial arrangements at a later date.
