The African Democratic Congress has announced the timetable for its nationwide congresses ahead of the party’s National Convention scheduled for April 14, 2026, as political activities gradually intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

In a public notice issued by the party leadership, the ADC said the nationwide congresses would begin at the grassroots level and move through various tiers of the party structure before culminating in the national convention.

The announcement was jointly signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, and the National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

According to the timetable released by the party, Polling Unit and Ward Congresses will take place on April 7, 2026. These will be followed by Local Government Area Congresses scheduled for April 9, while State Congresses are expected to hold on April 11. The process will conclude with the ADC National Convention on April 14, where key decisions on party leadership and direction are expected to be made.

The party explained that the congresses form part of its constitutional process for renewing leadership structures across all levels of the organisation. The exercise will begin from polling units and wards, progress through local government and state chapters, and eventually lead to the national convention where national officers will be affirmed.

ADC also advised party members interested in contesting for vacant positions within the party structure to obtain and complete nomination or expression of interest forms through the party’s official website.

In the statement, the party urged members across the country to actively participate in the process and adhere to the party’s constitution and democratic guidelines throughout the congresses and convention.

The announcement of the congress timetable comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission revised the schedule for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.

Under the updated timetable, presidential and National Assembly elections are expected to take place on January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027. The adjustment was made partly to avoid a clash with the Ramadan fasting period.

The revised electoral calendar also indicates that political party primaries will be conducted between April 23 and May 30, 2026. Political parties are required to submit their candidate nominations to the electoral commission between June 27 and July 11, 2026.

Campaigns for national elections are expected to commence on August 19, 2026, while the final voter register is scheduled to be published on December 15, 2026.

Political observers say the ADC’s early preparations and structured congress timetable signal the party’s effort to strengthen its internal organisation as parties across Nigeria begin positioning ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 elections.
