The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, has urged students of the institution to report cases of sexual harassment, extortion and other misconduct to appropriate university authorities for prompt action.

Professor Nwachukwu assured students that the university would protect the identity of complainants and deal decisively with offenders.

He reiterated that the institution has zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, “sex-for-marks,” extortion, sexual harassment and other unethical behaviours.

The vice-chancellor gave the warning during the 14th Matriculation Ceremony of the university held at the campus in Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State for the 2025/2026 academic session.

According to him, such misconduct undermines the university’s core values of excellence and integrity and will be punished in line with the provisions of the students’ handbook and other institutional regulations.

“Please report any of these offences to the appropriate university authorities, including the Chief Security Officer (CSO), Dean of Students’ Affairs, Director of SERVICOM and other relevant officials. We assure you of prompt action and protection of your identity,” he said.

Prof. Nwachukwu disclosed that a total of 5,227 students were admitted into the university for the 2025/2026 academic session and urged the new students to remain focused on their academic goals.

“Today marks another milestone in our university’s growth as we welcome 5,227 freshmen into our vibrant academic community. On behalf of the university management, I warmly welcome you and appreciate your families and friends who supported you to reach this stage,” he said.

The vice-chancellor described AE-FUNAI as one of the fastest-growing public universities in Nigeria, noting that the institution continues to gain national and international recognition.

He said his vision is to position the university as a centre of academic and intellectual excellence in Nigeria, Africa and the global academic community.

“Our goal is to create and sustain conditions that will make AE-FUNAI globally competitive and research-driven, while providing students with an exceptional educational experience that will equip them with knowledge and skills beneficial to Nigeria and humanity,” he added.

Prof. Nwachukwu encouraged the newly admitted students to remain disciplined, attend lectures regularly, complete assignments and engage actively with their lecturers.

He also advised them not to hesitate to seek help from relevant university authorities whenever necessary, adding that suggestion boxes placed across the campus are available for students to submit complaints or concerns.

The vice-chancellor further disclosed that the university plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its academic curriculum to prepare students for the demands of the rapidly evolving global environment.

He said the plan had already been presented to members of the university senate during his inaugural senate address on March 3, 2026.

Prof. Nwachukwu assured the students that the university would continue to provide the resources and support needed for them to excel academically.

He added that the institution would also reward students who demonstrate excellence, innovation and hard work in their academic pursuits and other productive endeavours.

“As students, you are not just here to earn degrees; you are here to become leaders, innovators and agents of change. Use your time here to explore opportunities, develop your talents and make meaningful contributions to society,” he said.
