A fire outbreak early Tuesday destroyed the medical laboratory section of the Plateau State College of Health Technology, Zawan in Zawan community, located in Jos South Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident, the Provost of the college, Atangs Ishaku, said the fire broke out around midnight and completely razed the laboratory section before emergency responders could contain it.
“Yes, it’s true, but we don’t know what really caused the fire. We’re still assessing the situation,” Ishaku said.
He explained that the incident was reported to him at about 12 am, prompting him to immediately contact the Federal Fire Service for assistance.

“I first called the Federal Fire Service, but they said they had a problem with their vehicle. I then contacted another team, and they eventually arrived, but by the time they got here, the fire had already spread extensively,” he added.
A student described the incident as a major setback for the institution.
“This is a huge loss for us. We’ve lost valuable equipment and resources that were crucial to our studies,” he said.
Another student also expressed concern about the impact of the destruction on their academic activities.
“It’s really sad. We don’t know how we’ll cope with the loss of our lab equipment and facilities. The college needs to take immediate action to address this,” she said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, while the management of the institution is yet to determine the full extent of the damage.
