The Federal Government has approved a N48 billion intervention to upgrade engineering faculties and facilities in 12 universities across the country, including the Engineering Faculty of Delta State University at its Oleh Campus.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development on Monday during the inauguration of the Implementation Committee on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Special High-Impact Intervention Projects held in Abuja.

According to the minister, each of the beneficiary institutions will receive N4 billion to either upgrade existing engineering infrastructure or construct new workshops and laboratories required for modern engineering education.

The institutions selected for the intervention include Federal University of Technology Minna in Niger State, Federal University of Technology Akure in Ondo State, Federal University of Technology Babura in Jigawa State, Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State, and Federal University of Technology Owerri in Imo State.

Other institutions benefiting from the federal intervention are Nigerian Army University Biu in Borno State, African Aviation and Aerospace University in Abuja, Shehu Shagari University of Education in Sokoto State, Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences in Enugu State, University of Ilesa in Osun State, Delta State University, and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University.

The minister explained that the initiative is aimed at strengthening engineering education and improving the capacity of Nigerian universities to produce highly skilled technical professionals needed for national development.

Alausa also revealed that an additional N20 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 TETFund guidelines to support further upgrades of engineering facilities in other selected universities across the country.

The intervention is expected to modernise laboratories, workshops and research infrastructure while boosting training in science, technology and engineering disciplines.

The inclusion of institutions from the South East such as the Federal University of Technology, Owerri in Imo State and the Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences in Enugu reflects the Federal Government’s effort to spread critical education infrastructure across regions as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system.

Education analysts say the upgrades could significantly improve engineering training, research output and industry readiness among graduates of the beneficiary universities.
