The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended nine students for their involvement in examination malpractice and the submission of falsified academic results.

The decision was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Chukwuka Icha.

Icha explained that the action followed deliberations at the institution’s 252nd Senate meeting, where reports from the ad hoc Senate Committee on Examination Malpractice and the Senate Students’ Disciplinary Committee were reviewed.

“After reviewing the reports and recommendations of the committees, the management resolved that the affected students should be suspended for two academic sessions and the suspension will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic year,” the statement read.

Five of the affected students are from the pharmacy department: Akwuba Enestina and Udom Iboro (both 300-level), Nwankwo Daniel (200-level), and Ore Israel and Chisom Ejafa (both 500-level).

The remaining four students, Lazarus Ebogo (home economics), Ele Godwin (zoology), Ofem Patrick (science laboratory technology), and Makailu Pamilo (linguistics and communication studies) were found guilty of presenting forged academic results.

The university has directed all heads of departments, deans, and the acting chief security officer to ensure full enforcement of the suspension order, signaling a strict stance against academic misconduct and dishonesty.
