Nigerian para badminton athlete Eniola Bolaji has risen to the World No. 1 position in the women’s SL3 category, according to the latest rankings from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) released on Tuesday, February 17.

Bolaji earned this top ranking after securing a silver medal at the 2026 World Para Badminton Championship held in Bahrain.

She was defeated 2–0 (21–12, 21–17) in the final by Japan’s world No. 7, Shino Kawai, at the New Capital Hall on February 14.

The multiple national and African champion has replaced Indonesia’s Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh at the top of the rankings.

Her rise was further supported by her victory at the Egypt International in January, where she defended her title for the second consecutive year.

Mr. Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, hailed Bolaji’s achievement as a significant milestone for both Nigeria and Africa, emphasizing that her success is a result of targeted investment and structured support for para-badminton in the country.

“This is the most exciting news of the year, with Eniola Bolaji claiming the World No. 1 position after her participation in the 2024 Paralympic Games.

“She might have reached this ranking sooner had she participated in more tournaments last year.

“She regained her full form last season and has continued that momentum into this year, already competing in two major tournaments with exceptional results.”

Orbih also recognized the vital role of key stakeholders in promoting the growth of para-badminton in Nigeria.

“This accomplishment reflects the support and resources provided to para badminton by the National Sports Commission, the Abia State government, and GIG Logistics.

Their ongoing assistance has created an environment where our athletes can train, compete, and excel on the world stage.”

Although Bolaji narrowly missed out on gold, Orbih praised her determination and historic achievement.

“I know many Nigerians were hoping for another gold medal, but we must acknowledge that other competitors are equally eager to challenge her.

She has now made history as the first African to win a silver medal at the Para-Badminton World Championship.

“The federation will continue to offer the necessary support as she prepares for future tournaments. We are confident that she will keep making Nigeria and Africa proud.”

Bolaji’s rise to World No. 1 represents another significant milestone in her impressive career and solidifies her position as a leading figure in international para badminton.
