The House of Representatives is to probe the non-release of agricultural intervention funds provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Bello Ka’oje (APC/ Kebbi) during plenary this week.

Moving the motion, Rep. Ka’oje expressed concern over delays in the disbursement of critical funds earmarked to boost agricultural production, strengthen food security, and provide support for farmers across the country.

He noted that the intervention funds were designed to stimulate rural economies, enhance value chains, and address persistent food supply challenges, but lamented that their non-release had stalled expected gains in the sector.

The lawmaker stressed that at a time when Nigeria is grappling with rising food prices and production constraints, the timely utilisation of such development financing is imperative.

Adopting the motion, the House underscored the need for transparency, accountability, and strict oversight in the management and disbursement of intervention funds obtained from development partners.

Lawmakers emphasised that unlocking the resources would accelerate agricultural recovery efforts, support smallholder farmers, and contribute meaningfully to national food sufficiency targets.

The House is expected to mandate the appropriate committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter and report back for further legislative action.
