ExxonMobil Chairman and Managing Director and Lead Country Manager, Mr. Jagir Baxi has commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in diversifying Nigeria’s sports sector by providing modern facilities and offering financial incentives and support for athletes.
Baxi expressed his commendation during an interview with reporters at the basketball finals of the ongoing 2026 Oil and Gas Industry Games held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
He noted that with the increased focus on sports in recent years, Nigeria has the potential to become one of the leading nations globally in sports development and urged the federal government to maintain this momentum.
“I encourage Nigeria to embrace sports as part of its culture,” he said.
As a participant, Baxi said he enjoyed the camaraderie and team spirit of the competition, which allowed him to make many new friends. He described the experience as remarkable.
He expressed satisfaction with the Local Organizing Committee for the 2026 championship, emphasizing that this year’s event signifies a shift towards fostering deeper connections between companies beyond mere professional interactions, creating lasting bonds that can impact future generations.
Baxi highlighted that the championship has brought together not only Nigerians but also participants from other countries decents.

He congratulated the teams competing in basketball, volleyball, and table tennis, which held their finals that day.
“I am here to celebrate with my team and everyone involved in the competitions. Everyone is a champion, regardless of winning or losing; the spirit of competition and teamwork is what truly matters.
The scores are secondary; what counts is the shared experience of competition in love. Everyone who participated is a champion,” her added.
On the sixth day of the event, thrilling finals were held in about four sports, including basketball, volleyball, and table tennis.
