The long-running political tension in Rivers State appears to be easing following a late-night intervention by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, raising fresh hopes of reconciliation between the state’s warring political camps.

According to a report by The Nation on Monday, President Tinubu convened a closed-door meeting involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and other influential political figures from the state. Although the full details of the discussions were not made public, sources familiar with the development described the engagement as a decisive step towards restoring political calm in Rivers State.

The report further disclosed that shortly after the meeting at Aso Rock, Governor Fubara reportedly accompanied Wike to his private residence in Guzape, Abuja, a move widely interpreted as a symbolic gesture aimed at mending strained relations between both leaders.

Political insiders told The Nation that Fubara was said to have appealed directly to Wike during the engagement, allegedly pledging to maintain respect for the former Rivers governor and influential power broker. The gesture, observers say, may signal a major breakthrough in the protracted power tussle that has unsettled governance and party cohesion in the oil-rich state.

The Rivers political crisis, which intensified in recent months, has drawn national attention and raised concerns over stability within the state’s political structure and the broader implications for the ruling party ahead of future elections. President Tinubu’s personal intervention underscores the strategic importance of Rivers State and the administration’s resolve to prevent prolonged political instability.

While neither Wike nor Fubara has officially commented on the outcome of the meeting, developments from Abuja suggest that behind-the-scenes negotiations are underway to achieve a lasting truce. Political watchers believe the apparent reconciliation could mark a turning point in Rivers State politics, ending months of open confrontation and paving the way for renewed cooperation among key stakeholders.

As Nigerians await official confirmation, the late-night Aso Rock meeting has already reshaped the political conversation, with many seeing it as a high-stakes peace move that could redefine power dynamics in Rivers State in the months ahead.
