Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have rescued a staff member of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) who was knocked down by a speeding truck along the Offin Canal axis, inward Eko Bridge, Lagos.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, disclosed this in a statement released on Friday.
According to Giwa, the incident occurred when a heavily laden containerised truck rammed into the LAWMA operative, identified as Mr Baba Ibeji, while he was carrying out routine refuse evacuation duties in the area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the articulated vehicle suffered brake failure while descending the CMS Bridge linking Offin Canal to Eko Bridge, causing the driver to lose control.
“The mechanical failure resulted in the truck mowing down the LAWMA worker before ramming into and crushing a Toyota Camry with registration number FST 417 FS,” Giwa said.
He added that LASTMA officials stationed at the scene acted swiftly to rescue the injured operative from beneath the wreckage of the truck.

The victim was initially rushed to a nearby Fuja Hospital but was reportedly refused admission due to the severity of his injuries. He was later transferred to the General Hospital for urgent specialist medical care.
Giwa disclosed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, describing the act as condemnable. However, the truck assistant was apprehended and handed over to security operatives led by the Divisional Traffic Officer of the Ebute-Ero Police Division, Lagos Island.
Expressing displeasure over what he described as reckless and irresponsible driving, the Special Adviser directed relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident with a view to prosecuting those found culpable in accordance with the law.
