President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of Justice Oyewole Kayode as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, in a move that signals another key step in strengthening the nation’s judiciary.

The request was conveyed in a letter read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Tuesday. Tinubu, in the letter, said the nomination was made in line with Section 231 subsection two of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which empowers the President to appoint Supreme Court justices subject to Senate approval.

The President expressed confidence that the Senate would give the request expeditious consideration and confirm the nominee without delay, underscoring the importance of timely appointments to the apex court.

Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred the presidential request to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening and further legislative action. The committee is expected to review Justice Oyewole’s credentials and submit its report to the Senate in the coming days.

Political observers say the nomination reflects ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to fill critical vacancies at the Supreme Court and ensure the effective administration of justice at the highest level of the judiciary.
