A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), headed by Nafiu Bala, has dismissed the defection and registration of the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
This faction claims to be the legitimate national leadership of the ADC and asserts that Obi’s reported registration at the party’s Enugu zonal office did not adhere to the party’s constitution.
Obi had previously announced his switch to the ADC during an event at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State, where he called for a united opposition to help rescue Nigeria from poverty, disunity, and a decline in democracy.
In a New Year message released in Abuja, Bala stated that the party needed to address misleading information regarding ADC membership registration.
He clarified that membership must start at the ward level, emphasizing that this is the only constitutionally recognized entry point into the party.

He noted that registration at zonal or national offices is prohibited by the party’s rules, and any such registrations would be deemed invalid.
The ADC leadership has officially distanced itself from Obi’s reported registration in Enugu and has initiated an investigation into the procedural violation.
The party also urged its members and the public to disregard claims of alternative registration methods, reiterating that ward-level registration is the only legitimate process.
This clarification follows a statement from the Labour Party, led by the Julius Abure faction, which characterized Obi’s defection to the ADC as a liberation for the party, asserting that his departure only confirmed an existing political divide.
