Opay has firmly denied a viral social media claim suggesting that the fintech company credited every user with ₦5,000 as a Christmas gift, describing the message as false, misleading, and a calculated attempt to scam unsuspecting Nigerians.

The misleading post, which gained traction on X on Thursday, claimed that Opay had sent ₦5,000 to all its users for Christmas celebrations, prompting widespread curiosity and confusion among customers asking whether others had received the supposed cash gift.

Reacting in a statement issued on Friday, the financial service provider dismissed the claim and cautioned the public to remain vigilant, especially during the festive season when fraudsters often exploit heightened financial activity.

Opay clarified that it is not running any cash giveaway, promotional payout, or money distribution programme tied to Christmas or any other celebration. The company stressed that any official campaign or reward would only be communicated through its verified channels.

The fintech firm also issued a strong warning to users against engaging with unknown individuals requesting money transfers or sensitive personal details under the guise of promotions. It specifically cautioned customers never to share critical information such as their Bank Verification Number, passwords, or one-time codes.

“Opay is not giving money to anyone during this festive season. Beware of scammers. Do not transfer money to strangers and never share your BVN or personal banking details with anyone,” the statement read.

The clarification comes amid rising concerns over holiday-related fraud, as cybercriminals increasingly target digital banking users with fake giveaways, phishing messages, and impersonation schemes.

Opay urged its customers to report suspicious messages and rely solely on official announcements to avoid falling victim to financial scams during the Yuletide period.
