American rapper Nicki Minaj has explained why she chose to publicly address reports of persecution and attacks on Christians in Nigeria, citing her personal connection to the country and growing concerns over attacks on worshippers.

Minaj made the remarks during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest on Sunday while responding to a question from Erika Kirk, widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Asked what prompted her to speak out on the situation in Nigeria, the rapper said the issue resonated deeply with her because of her ties to the country.

“Nigeria is a place I’ve always loved,” Minaj said. “Someone very dear to me, my pastor, is Nigerian, and I also have many Nigerian fans.”

She expressed outrage over reports of kidnappings and killings of Christians during church services, describing such acts as unacceptable.

“To hear that people are being kidnapped in church, killed and brutalised simply because of their faith, that should spark outrage,” she said.

Minaj added that she would no longer remain silent on issues affecting Christians globally.

“We’re not backing down anymore. We are not going to be silenced by bullies. We will continue to speak up for Christians wherever they are in the world,” she stated.

The Grammy-nominated artiste also spoke on the broader issue of religious freedom, noting that many people often overlook the privilege of worshipping freely.

“We take it for granted that, right now, there are people in this world who cannot worship God as they please or where they please,” she said.

She urged believers to remember those forced to practise their faith in secrecy, calling for prayers on their behalf.

“Whenever we pray in fellowship, we should remember those who are hiding to pray and lift them up in prayer,” Minaj added.
