The Chairman of Omala Local Government Area in Kogi State, Edibo Mark, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and banned public vigils following a surge in insecurity in the council area.

The curfew, which runs daily from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., took effect on December 2 and will remain in force until further notice. In addition, the council has directed 24-hour security surveillance and intensified patrols across all communities.

Speaking in a statement on Thursday, Mark said the measures were necessary to protect lives and property following a series of recent security breaches.

“To strengthen safety measures, security agencies are directed to intensify checks at entry points. All border routes must undergo strict stop-and-search operations with the Joint Task Force fully deployed,” he said.

The directive also places restrictions on religious and public activities. All public gatherings—including Moulud, Christian vigils, and similar programmes—are suspended until further notice.

“Festival fireworks have been banned, while worship centres are expected to keep services brief. Sunday services and mosque prayers should be conducted quickly and closed on time,” Mark added.

Residents have been urged to comply with the curfew and cooperate with security agencies, as public support is deemed essential for restoring peace.

The announcement follows a recent spate of kidnappings and communal clashes in Omala LGA, prompting the Kogi State Government to establish a forward operational base to curb insecurity and protect residents.
