The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has highlighted the vital role of the annual judiciary sports activities in enhancing the emotional stability and efficiency of judicial personnel.

She said the competition promotes wellbeing, unity, and a healthier work environment across the nation’s justice system.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 31st Judiciary Sports Competition at the Uyo Township Stadium, the chief justice, who was represented by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam of the Court of Appeal, Calabar Division, described the event as a platform that consistently builds camaraderie, discipline, and strategic thinking among judiciary staff.

She explained that while the judiciary is often associated with legal interpretation and safeguarding rights, its effectiveness heavily depends on the mental clarity and emotional balance of the workforce behind the scenes.

“Today’s event reminds us that the strength of the judiciary lies not only in its judicial officers but also in the vitality and commitment of staff who keep the wheels of justice turning,” she said.

Justice Kekere-Ekun said sports instill values such as teamwork, fairness, resilience, integrity, and respect, which are qualities that directly influence how justice is administered and how the public perceives the courts.

She added that the competition has become an avenue for staff across different departments and ranks to connect through shared purpose and encouragement.

Justice Kekere-Ekun praised the National Sports Association for the Judiciary (NASAJ) for its dedication to promoting fellowship and well-being within the judicial community.

She also expressed gratitude to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for hosting the tournament and consistently supporting the judiciary in the state.

Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, thanked God for the safety of participants and assured that the facilities at the stadium were fully prepared to support a smooth and healthy competition.
