The farewell ceremonies for the late Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu (Rtd.), OFR, commenced on Thursday, November 20, with a deeply reflective Service of Songs at the All Saints Anglican Church, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

The gathering drew an impressive array of dignitaries from various sectors of the nation—an indication of the profound respect and admiration the former military governor, statesman, and iconic Isoko leader commanded throughout his lifetime.

In attendance were notable personalities including former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Alexander Ogomudia (Rtd.); Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas; Hon. Jonathan Ukodhiko; Senator James Manager; President General of the Isoko Development Union (IDU), Professor Chris Akpotu; AIG Felix Ogbaudu (Rtd); Dr. Ogaga Ifowodo; and the widow of the deceased, Senator Stella Omu. The congregation also featured numerous senior military officers, political figures, community leaders, and clergy.

Born on July 1, 1940, and passing on April 29, 2025, at 84, Gen. Omu—who held the revered titles of Olodi of Igbide Kingdom and Othuke of Isoko Nation—left behind a legacy anchored on discipline, service, and unwavering devotion to Nigeria.

Tributes poured in from speakers who recounted his remarkable contributions to national development, describing him as a fearless soldier, principled administrator, and a patriot whose dedication to public service never diminished.

“He lived a life marked by honour, courage, and steadfast commitment,” one speaker reflected, noting that his values remain a consolation to his family and all who admired him.

The service was officiated by the Most Rev. E. E. Akanya and Rt. Rev. Dr. O. O. Ajayi, who led prayers for God’s comfort upon the bereaved family and eternal rest for the departed statesman.

Gen. Omu’s distinguished career included his tenure as Military Governor of the old South-Eastern State—today’s Cross River and Akwa Ibom—from 1975 to 1978, where he introduced reforms and supported infrastructural growth. He later served on the Armed Forces Ruling Council and also headed the Command and Staff College, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s governance and institutional development.

Outside public office, he remained a strong voice for community progress. As President General of the Isoko Development Union between 2014 and 2015, he championed unity, educational initiatives, and empowerment programs, earning the admiration of his people.

His final journey continues with several ceremonies planned across Abuja, Asaba, Oleh, and Igbide. These include a commemoration service on Tuesday, November 25, at St. Philips Anglican Church, Asaba; a lecture and tribute session on Thursday, November 27, at Isoko House, Oleh; and a lying-in-state and Service of Songs in Isoko South on Friday, November 28.

The concluding burial rites are scheduled for Saturday, November 29, starting with a lying-in-state at his residence, Ufuoma House, Igbide, followed by a funeral service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Igbide. A thanksgiving service will be held the next day, Sunday, November 30, at the same church.

General Paul Ufuoma Omu is remembered as a visionary, a tactful leader, and a patriot whose life and legacy will continue to inspire future generations within and beyond the Isoko Nation.
