Nigeria’s representative at the Miss Universe 2025 pageant, Onyinyechi Basil, made a striking impression during the national costume showcase held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Her masterpiece, titled “Akwa Nwanyi. The Frond of Womanhood,” drew inspiration from the sacred palm tree revered in Igboland, symbolising life, strength, femininity, and renewal.

In photos shared on her social media platforms, Onyinyechi’s costume featured a refined blend of raffia detailing, vibrant coral beads, and cowries, all crafted to celebrate the essence of womanhood and the deep cultural roots of the Igbo people.

A towering, celestial-themed headpiece extended upward, representing a bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms, while a woven mat beneath her feet paid homage to generations of women who have cultivated and nurtured the land.

The costumes’ earthy browns, lush greens, and multicoloured beadwork evoked themes of abundance, growth, and the enduring resilience of Nigerian women.

Nigeria was among several African nations that showcased their heritage at the event. Contestants from Angola, South Africa, and Zimbabwe also captivated audiences with intricately designed national costumes reflecting the pride and identity of their cultures.

The Miss Universe 2025 competition features 130 contestants from across the world, united under this year’s theme, “The Power of Love”, which highlights cultural storytelling, empowerment, and global inclusivity.
