Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has directed the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, following what he described as the “prevailing national security realities” requiring cautious action and responsible planning.
Announcing the decision in a statement on Thursday, the Secretary to the Government of the State, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, said the Governor considered it necessary to halt this year’s edition to ensure the event is properly fortified in future.

“His Excellency believes the marathon deserves comprehensive, multidimensional support, and that requires adequate preparation,” he stated.
Prof. Enoh explained that the government is committed to enhancing the event’s long-term value, noting that security considerations must take precedence. “The safety of participants, organisers and spectators remains paramount,” he said.
Governor Otu expressed regret over the inconvenience the cancellation may cause athletes, partners and organizers.
