A 96-year-old woman, identified as Habiba Ado, has been found dead after reportedly falling into a toilet pit in Sarai Village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident, confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service, occurred after the nonagenarian was declared missing for four days. According to the agency’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif, a distress call was received around 9:27 a.m. on Thursday from one Usman Adamu, who reported that a woman had fallen into a toilet pit (suckaway) in the area.

“When our rescue team arrived, they discovered that the victim had been missing for several days. She was retrieved from the pit unconscious and later confirmed dead,” Yusif said.

He added that family members of the deceased informed officials that the elderly woman had been suffering from a mental health condition prior to the incident.

The remains of Habiba Ado were handed over to the ward head of Sarai Village, Musa Muhammad, for burial arrangements.

In a statement of condolence, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and called on residents to ensure open pits and toilet holes are properly sealed to prevent similar tragedies.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to responding swiftly to emergencies and urged communities to report unsafe structures and hazardous conditions that may endanger lives.

The heartbreaking incident has sparked concern among locals over the safety of elderly residents, particularly those living alone or managing health challenges.
