The Coalition of All Health Sector Leaders (CASHEL) in Akwa Ibom State has commended Governor Umo Eno, for his continued commitment to reposition the health sector through far-reaching reforms and the recently approved welfare package for healthcare workers.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Aniekan Peter, Pharm.Abasiama Uwatt, Apostle Ekerette Bassey and Dr. Ithiel Essien, they noted that the reforms were aimed at improving the health sector and described the interventions as strategic.
They emphasized that the newly improved welfare package will boost the morale of the workers, enhancing staff retention thereby curbing the ” japa syndrome”and ultimately improve the overall productivity in the health sector.
” This monumental decision will go a long way in improving the quality of healthcare services in Akwa Ibom and enhancing the well being of its citizens. By prioritizing the needs of practitioners, the governor has shown that he values their dedication, resilience and sacrifices in serving humanity despite numerous challenges,” they said.
The group further highlighted that Nigeria currently has one of the highest patient-to-health-worker ratios globally, making the reforms a significant step towards addressing workforce shortages and reducing brain drain in the state.

They listed the governor’s achievements in the sector to include the renovation of healthcare facilities across the state, the Akwa Ibom Health insurance Agency, construction of an oxygen plant, establishment of a new General hospital at Ukanaful, the State emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System, etc.
While pledging total support for Governor Eno’s administration and its health-focused component of the ARISE Agenda, they reaffirmed their readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to ensure attitudinal change, professional excellence, and improved service delivery among health workers.
” We will work assiduously with the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John, and all stakeholders to improve staff commitments and ensure that empathy, dedication and resilience define the conduct of our members”, the Coalition stated.
