The Senate will today (Thursday) conduct the screening of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement was contained in a circular issued on Wednesday by the Director of Information at the National Assembly, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, and made available to journalists in Abuja.
According to the circular, the screening exercise is scheduled to hold at the Senate Chamber, National Assembly Complex, and will be open to media and live television coverage.
“The Office of the Secretary, Research and Information wishes to notify members of the press and the general public that the Senate will on Thursday, 16th October, 2025, conduct the screening of the nominee of President Bola Tinubu, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, as INEC Chairman,” the statement read in part.
President Tinubu’s nomination letter, read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, urged lawmakers to give the nominee “expeditious consideration” in line with Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Amupitan’s nomination follows last week’s endorsement by the National Council of State and marks the end of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s decade-long tenure as INEC Chairman.
The development comes at a politically sensitive time as debates on INEC’s independence, electoral integrity, and post-election reforms continue to dominate national discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While the Presidency described Amupitan as “an apolitical figure of impeccable integrity,” opposition parties and civil society groups have called for a transparent and merit-driven confirmation process.
