Togo international footballer Samuel Asamoah is fighting to regain mobility after suffering a devastating neck injury during a league match in China. The midfielder, who plays for Guangxi Pingguo FC, reportedly collided headfirst with an LED advertising board after being pushed by an opposing player during a Chinese League One fixture on Sunday.

According to reports from the club, Asamoah sustained multiple fractures in his neck along with nerve damage, forcing doctors to perform emergency surgery. In an official statement released on Monday, the club warned that the 29-year-old faces a serious risk of paralysis and will miss the rest of the season, adding that his professional career may now be in jeopardy.

By Wednesday, Guangxi Pingguo announced that Asamoah’s condition had stabilized following surgery, but on Thursday, doctors raised fresh concerns about possible high-level paraplegia, a condition that could permanently affect his ability to walk or play again.

“Guangxi Pingguo FC sincerely appreciates the concern and support from fans and the football community for Samuel Asamoah,” the club said. “Further updates on his condition will be shared after additional medical assessments.”

Before moving to China last year, Asamoah spent most of his career in Belgium, where he played for clubs including Sint-Truiden and KAS Eupen. He has also represented Togo’s national team six times.

Chinese sports outlet The Paper, quoting league authorities, confirmed that the LED display board Asamoah struck was installed three meters from the pitch, meeting international safety standards. However, the incident has reignited debate about player safety and the placement of advertising equipment around football fields.

Fans across Togo and Belgium have flooded social media with messages of prayer and solidarity, urging for Asamoah’s full recovery as the football world anxiously awaits further updates on his condition.
