Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has committed 33 percent ($11.7 billion) of his wealth to charitable causes as part of a long-term succession plan designed to ensure his philanthropic legacy continues for generations, his daughter, Halima Dangote, has disclosed.

Key Highlights

  • Dangote commits 33% of wealth to charity: Aliko Dangote has reportedly dedicated one-third of his estate to philanthropic causes as part of a long-term succession plan.
  • Estimated value of $11.7 billion: Based on an estimated net worth of $35.1 billion, the 33% commitment is worth approximately $11.7 billion.
  • Family-backed succession plan: His daughter, Halima Dangote, said the family has endorsed the arrangement, which has been incorporated into the family’s succession plans.
  • Sharia principles cited: The charitable allocation was structured in line with Islamic inheritance principles, according to Halima.
  • Focus on health and education: The commitment will support humanitarian causes, particularly healthcare, education and other social development initiatives.

Halima, who serves as a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, made the revelation in an interview with Bloomberg published on Tuesday.

She explained that the family has endorsed the billionaire industrialist’s decision to dedicate 33 percent of his estate to humanitarian causes.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote’s net worth is estimated at approximately $35.1 billion, meaning one-third of his current fortune would amount to about $11.7 billion, making it one of the largest philanthropic commitments ever announced by an African billionaire.

Halima said the decision reflects her father’s belief that philanthropy should remain a permanent part of his legacy rather than a one-time charitable gesture.

She explained that the arrangement has already been formally incorporated into the family’s succession plans in accordance with Islamic inheritance principles.

“He put all the structures in place for us to focus on health and education. He donated 25 percent to the foundation, and under Sharia law, he has dedicated 33 percent of his inheritance to the foundation,” she said.

She noted that Dangote’s children and mother were required to endorse the arrangement, describing the move as a deliberate effort to ensure that the family’s charitable work continues across future generations.

According to her, the family views philanthropy as a responsibility closely tied to the success of the Dangote business empire.

“We believe our business has succeeded because we continue to give back. Philanthropy is part of who we are, and that is why the 33 percent commitment is so important,” she added.

The planned donation builds on the extensive work already being carried out through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which was established in 1994 to support health, education, nutrition and humanitarian programmes across Africa.

Halima disclosed that the foundation received an endowment of $1.25 billion about a decade ago and has since attracted an additional $700 million in funding to expand its operations.

She said approximately 70 percent of the foundation’s annual spending is devoted to projects within Nigeria, while about 20 percent supports programmes in other African countries.

The remaining funding is allocated to humanitarian initiatives in other parts of the world.

The foundation has implemented several high-impact interventions over the years, including large-scale nutrition programmes, educational support, healthcare initiatives and disaster relief efforts.

It has also partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and state governments in northern Nigeria in campaigns that contributed significantly to the eradication of wild poliovirus across Africa.

Dangote’s planned charitable commitment comes at a time when billionaire philanthropy is receiving increasing global attention.

Although the proposed allocation falls below the 50 per cent benchmark commonly associated with the Giving Pledge initiative launched by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, analysts say it still represents one of the largest philanthropic commitments by any African business leader.

The announcement further strengthens Dangote’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading philanthropists.

With the latest succession plan now publicly confirmed, the foundation is expected to remain one of the continent’s largest philanthropic institutions, ensuring that a substantial portion of Dangote’s wealth continues to support social and economic development long after his lifetime.
